Artist's Statement:

Working in watercolor, I have pursued different themes over the years.  Initially, I created colorful flower studies, using a powerful wet-in-wet format.  I was particularly impressed by Emil Nolde’s German Expressionist flower works, bolstered by his status as one of Hitler’s Generate artists.  At one point, I noticed that the shadows my floral compositions were casting were more interesting than my recreations of them. This developed into a series of delicate, ethereal compositions in indigo.  I experimented with various sizes of paper, working with positive and negative shapes.  Simultaneously, I have been sketching figurative sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum, often in the company of artist friends.  From those efforts, I have been teaching myself to paint portrait busts.  I am particularly inspired by Francesco Clemente and his tour de force use of watercolor in portraiture.
